You ride the gain up for one track, then the next one takes the roof off. That’s not your ears — it’s inconsistent loudness between files. Here’s what LUFS is, why Serato’s Auto Gain doesn’t fully fix it, and how to level a whole library in one pass.
“Normalize to 0 dB” only matches the loudest instant in a file, not how loud it feels. A tightly compressed track and a dynamic one can hit the exact same peak and still sit 6 dB apart to your ears. Matching peaks doesn’t match perceived level — which is why “normalized” libraries still jump around.
LUFS (loudness units, full scale) measures perceived loudness across the whole track, using the BS.1770 standard — the same yardstick broadcast and streaming use to keep things even. One number tells you how loud a track genuinely feels, not just how high it peaks.
Auto Gain applies a volume offset inside Serato at playback; the file itself never changes. That’s fine until you load the track somewhere else — rekordbox, a standalone controller, a USB you hand to another DJ — and the leveling is gone. The fix that travels with the track is baking the level into the file.
For club energy, around −10 LUFS is a solid target — hotter than streaming’s −14, loud enough to land, with a true-peak ceiling (around −1 dBTP) so nothing clips on the way up. The point isn’t the exact number; it’s using the same number for everything so the whole library sits together.
Normalize the whole crate to that single target and the level is baked in for good — consistent in Serato and everywhere else, with no gain-riding between tracks. Set it, forget it.
